Early release of the “Games of Thrones” series in 2015 caused a rise in piracy

The audience of official channels has decreased.

Due to the leakage of four episodes of the “Game of Thrones” in 2015, millions of people for the first time used illegal sources to view them. As Torrent Freak noted , the series quickly spread on torrents and they were downloaded “millions of times”.

A study of a scientist from the University of Warsaw, Wojciech Hardy (Wojciech Hardy) showed the consequences of the “draining” and the appearance of series on torrents. According to the results, because of the leak, more people used “pirate” sites and did not stop to download the “Game of Thrones”. Many users first came to these resources, but remained on them.

The main conclusion is that the leak was a stimulus for the search for serials on illegal sources, and as a result, many of them continued to watch the series there.

For his research, Hardy used data about American viewers and information about Google’s search queries. He also came to the conclusion that the popularity of trackers led to negative consequences for the channels that produce serials and shows – their audience has decreased.

On the one hand, this means that content providers should pay much attention to not provoking an audience to switch to illegal sources to avoid losses.

On the other hand, it is possible that adequate advertising will help some “pirates” to switch to official channels.

April 12, 2015, four episodes of the series “Game of Thrones” channel HBO were available for download on torrents a day before the official world premiere. This happened a week after producer Greg Spence (Greg Spence) expressed his concerns about the possibility of a leak at one stage of the show’s production. Probably, the video appeared on the network through the fault of one of the reviewers.
