Artist of London of South Korean origin Hwang Kim (Hwang Kim) in 2010 made a series of four films about Western and South Korean culture. He wrote them down for 500 DVDs and sent them to North Korea with smugglers. The artist described this to Deutche Welle.

A series of four videos the artist called “Pizza for people” , they are about collecting things for a trip abroad, Korean pop artists, Christmas celebrations and pizza making. In each video for five minutes, starred two actors from South Korea.

As a result, a mixture of the series and amateur videos. We wanted to use light, a satirical tone and explain to the people of North Korea something about the culture of the West.

According to Kim, the idea to remove such video came to him after the news about the appearance of a pizzeria in Pyongyang. Kim Jong Il opened therestaurant in 2008, but the world learned about it in 2009. Ingredients for pizza were supplied from Italy, and cooks were sent to Rome and Naples to learn the correct way of cooking.

In Kim’s video about cooking pizza, the actress tells that in order to get to the restaurant, residents should book a place in it a few months before the visit.

It seemed to me extravagant. In North Korea, there is little access to a different culture for ordinary people, or it is strictly controlled. The authorities have such a privilege. And suddenly a pizzeria appears in North Korea. But there could be a small number of people there.

Filming took place in South Korea, the final version was recorded on 500 DVDs. Kim gave five free smugglers for a hundred discs and instructed them to distribute them to the black market in North Korea. According to the artist, he did not care whether they would be sold or handed over simply. He also does not know how many people got the disks, but the smugglers said that all the films were dispersed.

They [the smugglers] were my only channel of communication, but I must say that it is not very reliable. I have established certain relationships with them, but I can not fully trust them.

The artist said that usually smugglers bring the customer something as evidence of the work, they can be letters or receipts.

I also received a response. For example, photos of those who cooked pizza after watching the video.
