The Belgian Minister of Justice Cohen Hins announced that lootboxes in a number of popular games should be removed. Otherwise, publishers face imprisonment and a fine of up to 800 thousand euros.
The Game Board examined FIFA 18, Overwatch, Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Counter Strike: Global Offensive. Violations were not only in Star Wars Battlefront 2 – at the time of verification in this game there were no luteboxes. As for other shooters and a football simulator, developers will have to remove these elements from their games.
The Belgian authorities launched an investigation in November 2017 after the scandal surrounding the Star Wars Battlefront 2 shooter broke out. Then the players were outraged by the balance settings: without real money injections (buying lootboxes), the development went much slower. Developers from DICE decided to release the game without the lootboxes and add them later.
In Belgium, it was considered that lutboks are akin to gambling and cause dependence and force people to spend more money. The Dutch authorities came to the same conclusion . It is reported that violations they saw in PlayerUnknown Battleground’s, Dota 2, Rocket League and FIFA 18.
