Most manufacturers can produce the same smartphones under different names for different markets. The differences of such mobile phones are often unobtrusive for the end user, although, of course, there are exceptions. Xiaomi has achieved excellence in how to confuse the consumer: in its product portfolio there are the same smartphones under different names and different smartphones under the same names.
- Redmi Note 5 Pro and Redmi Note 5
- Design and screen
- Performance and battery life
The thing is that conditionally identical devices are oriented to those same mythical different markets, but in the era of globalization, you can limit the region of distribution only by some hard method. For example, tying the phone to a specific operator or an “exclusive” frequency. However, this practice was abandoned long ago and almost everywhere.
We had two smartphones at our disposal: Redmi Note 5 Pro and Redmi Note 5. The first is aimed at the Indian market, immediately assembles and even has a “talking” sticker on the box. It reads: India’s No.1 smartphone brand. The second is the international version of this model. However, Redmi Note 5 is also sold in India, but it has a single main camera, usual, without the “frontline” tweaks, but a slightly more capacious battery and a Snapdragon 625 chip.
The photos show both devices: Indian Redmi Note 5 Pro in champagne (officially pink gold) and black Redmi Note 5. The first one received a global firmware, so it does not have any problems with Google services.
The second model, after switching on, required a lot of gestures to install Google services, then problems began with installing applications from the application store – downloading files from the network took an incredibly long time. From this we can draw an obvious conclusion: a novice user should give preference to international versions of smartphones. All other consumers can act at their own peril and risk.
Looking at both phones, you can not understand where the catch is. They are the same slightly more than completely, which introduces into a stupor (if you know that it’s like a different device). By volitional decision, we begin to consider both smartphones as one and the same device.
Externally, the models differ only in color. All other elements from A to Z are identical and are located there. The back panel is made of metal, at the top and bottom there are two plastic inserts of the same color with the case and with a thin strip separating the elements from different materials from each other. In a bright smartphone, the shade of plastic inserts is different, in black such a nuance is invisible.
Already traditionally for modern smartphones, there are no standard Android-buttons. When the system is initially set up, the user can choose whether to fix the soft keys at the bottom of the display or to display them on command with a snap.
And for the “Chinese” Redmi Note 5, and for the “Indian” Redmi Note 5 Pro is characterized by the same problem: if you take the device in your left hand, the index finger with almost 100% probability will be on the lower lens of the dual camera, namely it is basic. If you forgot to wipe the glass before the next shot, the frames will be “foggy” and very far from perfect.
The lower ends of the devices were given under the 3.5-mm headphone jack, the main microphone, the microUSB connector and the speaker grill. The sound is quite acceptable – with bass, high and medium frequencies. The volume level is enough to “shout out” street noise without much stress.
On the right sidewall there is a volume rocker and a power button. The movement is clear and readable, the elements have an elongated shape and are placed high. Therefore, when grasping with your right hand you will have to stretch to increase the volume – keys with such dimensions would like to see a little lower, that is closer to the central axis.
The fingerprint reader is located on the back panel, there are no complaints about its operation.
Smartphones are equipped with identical 8-core Snapdragon 636 processors with a clock speed up to 1.8 GHz. RAM – 4 GB from the “Indian” Redmi Note 5 Pro and 3 GB from the “Chinese” Redmi Note 5. There is also a modification with 6 GB “RAM”, but quite enough and four.
Synthetic tests showed the expected results, sending models far away from the leaders. The devices scored a slightly different number of “parrots”, which may be due to the amount of RAM and the installed operating system. So, Redmi Note 5 Pro is running Android 7.1.1 with an international firmware version, Redmi Note 5 – on Android 8 with a Chinese version of the shell (the international will roll around sometime in mid-May, with it, and it will go on sale).
Probably, there is an abundance of additional “garbage” software, which smartphones for the Chinese market sin, or some subtleties of the non-international version of the shell. Obviously, updates should fix all the unpleasant nuances.
The capacity of the battery in the devices is 4000 mAh. The battery showed itself perfectly in standby mode, lasting about three days. With active interaction, the battery can work for about one and a half days, and with a serious load – working day. Subjective indicators are slightly above average (or rather habitual), but not outstanding.
Smartphone Redmi Note 5 Pro received a dual main camera in the layout of 12 + 5 megapixels and the front 20-megapixel. This is another difference between the devices from each other (in addition to the amount of RAM), because Redmi Note 5 also has a dual main camera of 12 + 5 megapixels, but “only” 13-megapixel front. This information was obtained with the help of AnTuTu.
In devaysah there is a standard set of presets for shooting. There is also manual, but it is not “professional”: there is only an opportunity to choose ISO and determine the white balance mode.
Unbelievable, but true: this time to the cameras of Xiaomi smartphones almost did not arise questions, they work best in bright sunlight. For its price segment – a good mark. How sharp the front camera of the “Indian” Redmi Note 5 Pro is, the professionals will judge, the simple user will hardly notice the difference between the pictures.
The company Xiaomi once again proves that its strength is in the middle price segment. Reviewed by Redmi Note 5 Pro and his colleague are neat smartphones with a design that does not give up cheaply. Mobile phones are characterized by high performance, excellent battery and screen, and also a good camera for the segment (a 20-megapixel self-camera has the right to exist, but it makes little sense – only if you are not going to print wall-papers on the wall).
