The velcom operator announced the launch of VoWiFi (Voice over Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Calling) technology, which allows making calls over Wi-Fi without access to the signal from base stations. You can call both to mobile phones of any operators, and to landline numbers. The service will be available to subscribers of the company from April 13.
The role of the base station in this case is performed by the Wi-Fi-router, which is connected to the velcom network. Among the advantages of calls between subscribers using the technology of Wi-Fi Calling, the company’s representatives called faster connection establishment in comparison with the usual network and super-sharp sound in HD-Voice format.
In velcom they assured that calls on Wi-Fi are safe: a special tunnel is created between the phone and the network, and all data is transmitted in encrypted form. Make and receive calls on the new technology will be available throughout the country. It is supposed that it will be especially in demand inside large buildings (the upper floors of high-rises, underground floors, business centers).
The cost of calling VoWiFi technology does not affect – as before, it will depend on the tariff. For calls over Wi-Fi you need a smartphone with support for VoWiFi technology. While we are talking about Huawei P10, P20, P20 Lite and ZTE Blade A6, later support for the new product will appear in Huawei Mate 10 Pro and Huawei P Smart.
Wi-Fi calls do not require the installation of a special application. It is enough to enable the function “Wi-Fi-calls” in the phone settings. After that, the name of the operator in the upper menu will be changed to velcom Wi-Fi. Calls to Wi-Fi can be made only from a fixed network of velcom. Also, the technology does not work in flight mode.
