In February, information appeared about Apple’s intention to abandon intermediaries in the purchase of one of the key components for lithium-ion batteries – cobalt. In search of similar arrangements are also companies such as BMW, Volkswagen and Samsung. On the eve of the agency Bloomberg reported that the company Samsung C & T Corp. conducts direct negotiations with the company that extracts cobalt in the DRC.
If Apple does not self-release batteries, giving them to contract factory, then for Samsung direct purchases of raw materials for batteries look more effective approach. At the same time, the Korean corporation did not adhere to this practice before.
Bloomberg notes that in September 2016, a metric ton of cobalt ore cost $ 20,000, currently $ 80,000. This is probably why large companies are looking for ways to reduce their costs.
