Hackers have taught robots to show porn and extort bitcoins

Scammers have long used malicious software to extort money – files on the electronic device are encrypted, and for the opportunity to return access to them must be paid (however, payment is not a guarantee). As experts from the company IOActive found out, under the impact are not only computers or smartphones – a new target may be robots.

As evidence, experts hacked the humanoid robot NAO of SoftBank. He is the “twin” of the more famous robot Pepper, which is also vulnerable to hackers. These devices work as assistant sellers, they can be found in educational institutions. NAO is equipped with a large display located in the chest area, a microphone and speakers.

IOActive specialists reported the vulnerability to the robot manufacturer about a year ago, but there is no information that the security hole is closed.

As demonstrated in the company, the infected robot can be completely disabled, teach how to display pornography (or any other content) on a color screen, curse customers and attack a person. On behalf of cybercriminals, a robot for the return of control may require a ransom in the crypto currency. The difficulties are added by the fact that fixing or replacing the device can take weeks. So, in general, it happened with the robot at the disposal of IOActive – it can be returned to the system only by the manufacturer, and the client pays all the accompanying costs.
