Chairman of the Norwegian Parliament ulemica Tomessen (Olemic Thommessen) went into retirement due to the fact that the repair of the parliament building costs were significantly higher than the original estimate. The new speaker will be selected in the coming weeks.

Repair work began in 2014. According to NRK, in 2015 the project cost was 1.1 billion Norwegian kroner (about 140 million dollars). In 2018 this amount increased to 2.3 billion kronor (about 294 million dollars). As the channel noted, the budget money was paid to 116 different companies.

The auditors claimed that inefficient management of expenses occurred during the repair. Parliament was also criticized for attracting too many contractors and consultants, rather than entrusting the reconstruction to the state construction agency.

On March 7, most of the parties in Parliament expressed distrust to Thomessen, which is why he resigned. He explained that expenses had grown because of planning errors. Tomessen is a member of the Conservative Party, he headed the parliament in October 2013.
