Russian-linked hackers attacked the computer networks of the Ministry of Defense and the German Foreign Ministry, the German DPA agency reported , citing sources. The German Interior Ministry confirmed that it is investigating a cyber attack, and specified that it “took the situation under control.”
According to the publication, the attack was carried out by APT28, which is also known as Fancy Bear. Hackers who broke into the networks of the German government, allegedly introduced malicious programs and stole documents.
It is not clear how long cyberattacks lasted. German special services found them in December 2017, but admitted that the intervention lasted the whole year.
The hackers are involved in hacking the servers of the National Committee of the Democratic Party of the United States, cyber espionage in the interests of Russia, as well as in cyberattacks to the Bundestag, NATO and hotel guests in Europe and the Middle East. According to one version, APT28 is connected with Russian military intelligence.
Previously, counterintelligence Germany allowed the possibility of Russia’s interference in the upcoming German elections. However, the CEC and the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Germany did not find evidence of the influence of the Russian Federation on the electoral process in the country.
