Vivo Apex – skid

At the exhibition Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona, Vivo presented its concept of a frameless Vivo Apex smartphone. The thickness of the side and top frames is 1.8 mm, the thickness of the bottom 4.3 mm. For example Samsung S9: side – 1.5 mm, upper – 8.18 mm, lower – 6.96 mm; iPhone X: around the perimeter – 4.13 mm, cutout – 8.93 mm. If Vivo manages to make the bottom frame the same thickness as the side frame (1.8 mm), then the screen will occupy more than 98% of the front panel (Samsung S9: 83.6%; iPhone X: 82.9%).

This result was achieved thanks to several tricks:

1. Camera

In order not to enlarge the bottom frame and not make a cutout at the top, Vivo decided to place the front camera at 8 MP in the drawer at the top of the smartphone. When switching to the front camera, it automatically leaves in 0.8 seconds and is automatically removed after use. Fans of electrical tape on webcams should evaluate this solution. It remains unclear how reliable and durable this mechanism is.

2. Speaker

Instead of conversational dynamics, Vivo uses Screen SoundCasting technology with APEX ™, which turns the entire display into a speaker. Screen SoundCasting technology transmits vibrations through the display without the need for a traditional loudspeaker. A similar solution was in the Mi Mix of the first generation. However, Vivo assures that, compared to other audio solutions for frameless smartphones, their technology saves electricity, reduces sound leakage and optimizes sound for a better and more balanced sound.

3. Sensors

The proximity sensor was located under the screen, but the light sensor was placed on the upper end. This decision is not very clear, since in the smart-clock the light sensor is also built into the screen (LG Watch Sport, Samsung Gear S3).

4. The fingerprint reader

Introducing the first smartphone with a Vivo X20 Plus UD imager integrated into the screen, the company went further and in Vivo Apex expanded the scanning zone. Vivo says that the user can use the entire bottom half of the screen to scan the print. However, about a third of the screen is allocated in the unlock interface.

For greater security, it is possible to configure the unlock with two fingerprints.

Vivo does not elaborate on the other technical characteristics of the phone in detail. Also, it is not known when to expect a full-fledged phone for the market based on this concept.
