Neuroscientists at the Institute of Neurology and human behavior (a division of the University of California at Los Angeles) in mice have established that the use of food intended for the sleep time adversely affects the ability of the brain to learning and memory formation. Nutritionists have known that the use of food at night when the body are important processes related to metabolism, leads to metabolic disorders and threatens the formation preddiabetnyh states. Now US neuroscientists have found yet another harmful effect of night dozhora – deterioration of the main functions of the brain. “We presented the first evidence of the fact that the regular consumption of food not intended for this time has a far-reaching impact on the ability of learning and memory – warns lead author Dan Loch [Dawn Loh]. – As many are used to working or playing at the time, designed for sleeping, information on disorders of the brain will be quite important for everyone. ”
Of course, for the time being all the experiments were conducted only in mice. However, some researchers have conducted tests, which resulted in people working in shifts, worse than others cope with the cognitive tests. Regarding mice proved that continuous feeding at night leads to deterioration of both short-term memory (the ability to recognize the recently studied objects), and long-term. Both of these functions, according to modern concepts in neuroscience are governed by the hippocampus – a part of the limbic system of the brain. In addition to memory, the hippocampus is responsible for generating emotions and ability to concentrate. Some genes responsible for circadian rhythms, learning and memory, are regulated by the protein CREB. This protein is the most active stands in the daytime and at night its activity is significantly reduced. Thus the activity of suprachiasmatic nucleus – hippocampal responsible for circadian rhythms – the protein is not affected.Dissynchronization circadian rhythms in different parts of the brain and leads, according to scientists, a disruption of the normal memory formation. In addition, scientists have noted a violation of sleep rhythms in the experimental mice. Although the total number of hours per day spent by mice in a dream, is not changed, the quality of their sleep worse. They slept fitfully, a short period during the day and night.
