In New York City in the East River on Rikers Island is the world’s largest prison. According to the 2009 census, the island area of about 2 square kilometers, there are 11 350 people, including prisoners (most of) the staff of the correctional institution and civil. Some prisoners are held in a floating body, which is built on the basis of written-off the British landing craft. In 1992, the floating body Vernon C. Bain put into operation and now here contained at least 800 prisoners.
